10 Ways to Get Recognized on PrepChamps

Thursday, December 11th, 2008, filed in Athlete's Corner

At PrepChamps, our ultimate goal is to help high school athletes get recognized and recruited and connect them with college coaches, other athletes and fans. Here are 10 tips for athletes to help you get the most out of your PrepChamps profile. If you haven’t created a free profile yet, sign up now and upload your pictures, athletic achievements, stats and highlight videos for coaches to see.

1) Tell People About Yourself

Use the “About Me” section of your profile to let people know what kind of person you are. Are there aspects of your life or your character that you think coaches should know about? This is a great place to tell them. You don’t have to write your entire life story but be sure to include a little bit about your background (sports and life), any awards you’ve received and anything else that would be interesting to coaches.

2) Upload a Picture…a GOOD One

Having a good, clear picture is important because it lets coaches put name with a face. A coach may not remember your name at first, but he may remember your face and any extra edge you can get is always a plus. Try to put up a high-quality picture. You wouldn’t send in a resume on poor-quality paper, so make sure to include a picture that is clear and is easy to see your face. When a coach does a search, he/she is much more likely to click on your picture and visit your profile if it looks good. You can also upload some action shots, if you have them.

4) Fill Out Your Stats

Under the “sports” section of your dashboard, you can include any stats you’d like for just about every sport (if we’re missing any please let us know and we’ll add them). Stats are still a very important part in showing coaches and fans how you perform. Try to be as specific as possible and don’t feel pressured to inflate your stats–if you’re getting any looks from a coach, he/she will find out the truth eventually, so no need to hide anything or exaggerate.

5) Put Up Highlight Videos

Next to seeing you play in person, highlight videos are often the best thing to show a coach that will generate interest. A good highlight video should feature your top 20-25 plays and be no longer than 5 minutes. Try to put your jersey number at the beginning of the video so people can tell who you are if you’re around other players in certain parts. Ask your high school coach to help you put together a highlight reel or if you have your own game film, you can edit it by using software such as iMove or Windows Movie Maker (These come preloaded on most new computers). If for some reason you can’t upload a copy of your highlight video, feel free to send us your video in the mail and we’ll post it for you.

Here’s an example of a good, short highlight video for soccer from Nick Butler:

6) Fill Out Your Interests

On the “Interests” section of your dashboard, you can let people know what your favorite teams are, what colleges your interested in, what sport you’d like to play in college, and what you’d like to major in (if you know). This is a good way to let coaches and fans know even more about you, so they can see whether you’re a good fit for their program. The more they know about you, the better, in most cases.

7) Include Your Academic Information

Under the “Academics” section of your dashboard you can fill in your GPA, PSAT, SAT and ACT scores. Coaches like to see your grades so they can determine if you’re a good student or not. Grades matter, and if you can’t qualify, you can’t play. A great thing about this feature is that you can choose to show your grades to everyone, or just to coaches, if you’d like to keep this information private.

8 ) Keep Things Updated

Be sure to keep your profile updated with the most up-to-date information about your stats, academic information and awards, so coaches can get a good sense of how you’re doing. You can also let people know how you’re doing in the “My Activities” section under “My Tools.” This is sort of like a Facebook Status Message where you can let people know what’s going on in your sports life and recruiting process.

9) Show Coaches Your Profile

If you have a general idea of some school that you’re interested in, contact the coaches there and let them know you’re interested. You can then send them a link to your profile on PrepChamps so they can see your highlights, stats, and academic info all in one place. If you have a premium account, you can search through 25,000 coaches and colleges to find email addresses of coaches you’d like to contact.

10) Invite Your Friends

It can be fun to have your friends and teammates on PrepChamps so you can compare stats, check out their pictures and highlights and beat them in PrepChamps Challenges (another way for recognition). It can also be rewarding–as we have a monthly contest where the person who invites the most friends to PrepChamps (must be at least 10) will receive a free 8gb iPod Nano. 2nd and 3rd place prizes include an iPod Shuffle and $50 iTunes gift card. Check out the contest page here.

We hope you find these 10 ideas useful. Feel free to let us know if you ever have any questions or need help with anything on our site.
