2009 Flyin’ to the Hoop Men’s Basketball Invitational

The 7th annual Flyin’ To The Hoop Men’s Basketball Invitational prepares to take flight again in 2009 on January 17-19th at the Trent Arena in Dayton, Ohio. From a talent perspective, this year’s field has more talent than any other event of its kind in the midwest. The event brings together a great mix of local and national players, and over 20 of the top 100 high school basketball players in the entire country will be participating.

The event will feature at total of 24 teams playing 16 games. Here’s a sample of what you can see at this year’s tournament:

  • #1 Team in the country (preseason) - Montrose Christian, MD (3 Top 50 Players)
  • #1 Team in Ohio (preseason) - Columbus Northland, OH
  • #1 Junior in the country (preseason) - Jeremy Tyler (San Diego HS, CA)
  • #1 Freshman in the country - Justin Anderson (Montrose Christian, MD)

Marquee Match-up Game:

Columbus Northland (Ohio) and Jared Sullinger (#2 player from Class of 2010 according to Scout.com) VS. San Diego High School (California) and Jeremy Tyler (#7 player from Class of 2010 according to Scout.com)

The reason we wanted to highlight this event is because PrepChamps is now their official recruiting partner. See below for a brief history of the event.

Flyin’ To The Hoop was founded by Eric Horstman in 2003 as an in-season prep basketball showcase held every Martin Luther King weekend in Dayton, OH. Over that time, the tournament has had over 125+ players move on to play Division I college basketball, in addition to a few who currently play in the NBA, such as Rudy Gay, J.R. Smith and Josh Boone. Tickets are $10 / $20 per day (General Admission/Reserved Seating @ 5 games per day) or a 3-day pass for all 16 games is available. College coaches packets are also available for the whole weekend. For further schedule information visit the official website at www.flyintothehoop.com.

This event has featured some fantastic matchups the past 7 years. I have been lucky enough to attend a few the past three years. The Oak Hill Academy Matchup with Trotwood Madison in 2007 and the BJ Mullens 62 point 20 rebound game in 2008 were fantastic. If you can drive to the games this year its worth it for your kids as they can get up close to players and it its only $40 for a family of 4. My boys have been able to get autographs from some NBA players like Brandon Jennings, DeAndre Jordan, Daquean Cook to name a few. I can’t say enough having been to many of these summer events and seeing how they are run. This event and venue are first class and I can’t wait to see the teams and players that are coming this year. I may even have to call in sick on Monday just so I can make it to those games too.
