For those of you out there watching the Stanley Cup Finals, you may have seen an octopus on the ice to open Saturday nights game at the Mellon Arena in Pitt. What you may not have seen, however, is the story that unfolded in the Detroit Free Press on Sunday . . .
You have to hand it to the ever-loyal, extremely motivated fan that the Red Wings have in 19-yr-old Zach Smith: not only did he make the trip from Detroit to Pittsburgh to watch his team; he even brought along a raw and very dead octopus to sling onto the ice at the onset of Game 3.
Now, as many know, it is illegal to throw anything on to the ice (except hats on a hat trick). As such, Smith was immediately thrown out of the arena, but by the same token, that was all part of his plan. Quickly changing from a T-shirt to a Red Wings jersey, Smith got back into the game with a scalped ticket to ultimately watch the Red Wings win what could turn out to be the last game of the Stanley Cup Finals in Pittsburgh this season.
Hats off, err, Octopus Thrown for this enthusiastic fan . . .
