Chris Rivers is Reebok’s Global Director of Basketball Operations. He was responsible for running and putting on the Reebok Summer Championships last week in Las Vegas, Nevada. A representative from Wazoo Sports interviewed Chris last week at the event. In the interview, Chris discusses the event, coaches, athletes and fans of high school basketball who were able to see some excellent competition last week.

Chris says that he and his staff are “committed towards making this the best summer event in the country.” He later discusses Reebok’s partnerships with PrepChamps and Wazoo Sports, saying they have allowed Reebok to reach people who have never seen their events before. Chris continues by saying that this is not only great for the Reebok brand, but also for the athletes who are participating in these events. Click the link below to see the full interview:

Interview with Chris Rivers

At PrepChamps, we understand that events like these are important in the recruiting process for high school athletes. But we also believe that athletes should do everything they can to get their name out. This is why we exist - to help athletes get recognized and recruited. That means being involved with great events like the Reebok Summer Championships and providing a place for athletes to upload their stats and highlight videos to help get their stories out and in front of coaches.

Houston’s Ray Penn is leading the Reebok Summer Championships in scoring

As if the intensity couldn’t get any higher, it did on days three and four of the Reebok Summer Championships. The play on day’s three and four of the RBK Summer Championships was full of excitement.

This week I have taken the opportunity to watch some of the teams/players that I have not had the chance to see and boy did I see some good ones. Take a look at a few of the top prospects in the country that you may not know too much about now but soon you will …

Raymond Penn 5′10 Fort Bend Travi H.S. Houston, TX 2009
- Ray Penn was not only my choice as “Today’s Top Performer” but also the “Suprise Player of the Day”. Ray showed so many things, but let me start by saying that this young man is a really good guard. Ray was simply “unstoppable” against the World Wide Renagades Black, scoring a game high 43 points. Ray scored and dished out assists at will. From zones, to box-and-one’s, to triple teams it didn’t matter - Ray dominated by scoring or creating opportunities for his teammates constantly. Ray Penn put on one of the best scoring performances that I’ve seen in a long time. This young man has a bag full of moves and counter moves. Ray is also a deadly 3-point shooter and his mid-range game is automatic. Ray get’s to the basket and finishes at a high rate, his quickness and footspeed is hard to match. This young man can play at pretty much any level and be productive. Currently leading the Reebok Summer Championships in scoring with a 35.8 points per/game scoring average.

Shawn Kemp 6′10 Cherekee H.S. Marietta, GA 2009
- Shawn has all of the physical attributes that a player can ask for. UNFORTUNATELY, he needs to get much more aggressive and physical. If Shawn were to improve those particular aspects of his game, he would undoubtably be a Top 30 prospect in his class.

Jerod Olson 6′9 Collins Hills H.S. Lawrenceville, GA 2009
Olson is very good around the basket. He’s also fairly mobile and is a hard hat inside. A true post, he has good touch around the basket and can shoot the mid-range shot well. Jerod is an extremly good finisher. This young man is a high major D-I prospect.

Collin Slotter 6′6 South Cobb H.S. Kennesaw, GA 2009
Collin, Collin, Collin where do I start? Let me just say that Collin is a complete player. Collin was my pick as “Today’s Top Performer” (until Ray Penn went bonkers in the 2nd half). Slotter can shoot the deep ball and mid-range as well. Mentally and physically tough, Collin also showed a high level of skill and an array of good moves along with an above average ballhandling ability. While Collin let the game come to him, he scored whenever he felt the need to do so (17pts). With under two minutes to play in the game Collin, on back to back posessions, split the defense of the Houston Superstars from the wing and went down the middle for two (2) thunderous dunks to seal the win for the World Wide Renagades Black squad.

Brandon Reed 6′4 Whitefield Academy H.S. Powder Springs, GA 2009
Brandon is a 6-foot-4 silky smooth, athletic combo who has a strong desire to score. While on the same team as Shawn Kemp, Jerod Olson and Colin Slotter, Brandon (believe it or not)might be the top scoring option on the team. Brandon led his team with 30pts and it seemed as if Brandon scored everytime he touched the ball. If Brandon get’s in the paint, 9 times out of ten he’s going to finish or go to the free throw line. Brandon is an average 3-point shooter, but his mid-range game is much more effeciant. Brandon’s a very good defender who tends to get his long arms into the passing lane, often to either deflect the pass or get the steel and finish.

Jadarius Davis 6′9 Lufkin H.S. Houston, TX 2010
Jadarius falls in line as the quentessential “Texas big man” physically and athletically inclined. Jadarius has average foot work and moves around the basket. Jadarius is very aggressive, plays at a high intensity level and he’s also a good clean up man or as some of you may refer to as “a garbage man,” consistantly getting put backs, second and third attempts before scoring or getting fouled. If Jadarius improves his foot work and moves around the basket this young man will become a force to be wreckoned with.

Tony Freeland 6′7 Freemont H.S. Los Angeles, CA 2009
- Tony is a scorer. Tony get’s to the basket very well for a player of his size, 6-foot-7. Tony has above average ballhandling abilities and is a good mid-range shooter. Tony is relentless when it comes to getting to the basket. In fact, once he makes his mind up that he’s getting to basket it’s a wrap. Tony is physically and mentally well prepared and plays with a little bit of a swagger and when you see this young man play, you will understand why. Tony’s athleticism, agression, and determination (not to mention his abilities)sets him apart from most wings. Tony can also play the 2-Guard position no problem. I’m not sure what this young man’s academic situation is like, but if he’s a qualifier don’t be suprised to see him eventually playing in the PAC-10.

Jules Montgomery 6′9 Chaminade H.S. North Hills, CA 2009
- Jules is of the better wing prospects in the 2009 class that I’ve seen. Jules reminds me a lot like a young Tayshaun Prince. Jules is an exceptional 3-point shooter and at 6-foot-9 that makes him a big problem for all defenses. Jules does everything well. Jules is very long, rangy, and has a hunger for scoring. Combine all those things and you have a four or five star prospect.

Devonte Elliot 6-10 Paramount H.S. Paramount, CA 2009
- Devonte is a true big. Devonte is very athletic, long and rangy. Devonte is a very good shot blocker who’s athleticism some times get’s him into trouble. Devonte tends to leave his feet in attempt to block shots and because he’s bigger and much more athletic than most of his counterparts, he also tends not to box out and just out jump everyone, which came back to bite him when his AAU team the I CAN All-Stars faced the extremly well coached Illinios Wolves and suffered a two point loss 93-91. Devonte is one of those players that, for whatever reason, may not be mentioned as frequent as others, but believe me, he can compete with any post.

Moses Morgan 6-6 Merced H.S. Merced, CA 2010
- Moses has a very high basketball I.Q. and has a nose for the game in an era where most players are more focused on thier athletic ability not there mental knowledge of the game. Moses has a very solid total game. Moses is a very good defender who happens to go hard on every possession by getting low, not just getting a hand in the passing lane but the proper hand in the passing lane and cutting off angles. This young man’s academics are good which brings me to one conclusion, this young fella has a bright future ahead of him.

When it comes to his hieght, this young man get’s overlooked, that is until
he steps on the basketball court.

Standing at 5-foot-4, Ray Taylor of Florida has had to earn his keep every
step of the way.

“It’s been hard but nothin good comes easy and to honest with you, I like it
better that way,” said Taylor.

Taylor played extremly well at this year’s Reebok All-American Camp where he
was my pick as the MVP of the championship game. As if being vertically
challenged wasn’t enough, Taylor has scraped for playing time for years on
his own AAU team, Team Breakdown, who by the way has the best backcourt in
the country (Kenny Boynton & Brandon Knight) not to mention Pe’Shon Howard
(one of the top guards in the 2010 class).

Thus far in Team Breakdown’s performance as a team in this year’s Reebok
Summer Championships, Taylor has played very well, coming off the bench to
contribute scoring and floor general leadership to his team. Taylor was
instrumental in the big win that Team Breakdown had against one of the most
feared backcourts in the country, Abdul Gaddy & Avery Bradley of the
Northwest Panthers.

In my opinion, Taylor is the most intriguing player that I’ve seen all
summer and as small as he is, he’s such an impact player. Each time that
I’ve watched Taylor play, whether it was at the RBK AAC or with his AAU
team, Ray has gotten his team going either by getting to the basket, by
dishing to a teamate or getting a steal and getting a fast break started.

When pressed, Taylor (”Ray-Ray” as his teamates call him) is a one-man press
breaker, escpecially at the end of games for example, when the NW Panthers
were losing to Team Breakdown with just under two (2) minutes to play in the
game. With the NW Panthers in desparate need of a steal or foul, Ray took
control and displayed his unbelievable speed, quickness and ballhandling
ability. By doing so, Ray was able to waste over a minute off the clock
before the NW Panthers were able to commite a foul.

I will say this, whomever signs Ray Taylor, whether it’s a mid major or high
major, they will not be disappointed. So don’t let his heigth fool you!

Here’s a look at five schools that have high interest in Taylor: Florida
Atlantic University, UAB, Tennessee Tech, University of San Fransisco and
Duquesne.

This year’s Reebok Summer Championships have been as exciting as ever,
filled with loads of excitement and stellar performances. With the majority
of the nation’s top teams in attendance and going at it, the competition has
been fierce and steady.

Friday afternoon saw the Arizona Metro Elite, coached by Kenny Mullins,
defeat last year’s RBK tournament champion, Belmont Shore (CA) in exciting
fashion, 76-71. The win propelled the Metro Elite into this year’s Sweet 16
of teams in the Open Division bracket.

Wearing uniforms that read Arizona Magic on them, in commemoration of the
former Magic organization, this group of unselfish and hardworking
performers united together in impressive fashion to take downj last year’s
tournament champion.

6-foot-3 senior Mike Topercer of New Hampton Prep (NH) continued his
terrific play in this year’s tournament, shooting the lights out once again
in route to a 25 point performance to lead the game in scoring. The Metro
Elite also got great support from Travis Payton who ran the team effectively
all game, and pumped in 20 points of his own.

Topercer’s 16 first half points pushed the team out to an early lead and
kept them there, leading to the win.

The Metro Elite will advance to tonight’s game against the California
Pharoahs at 6:45PM at Silverado HS in Las Vegas, NV, where they will face
another Arizona product, 6-foot-3 senior Nick Markovich of Basha High
School. Markovich plays for the California team and will look to lead his
group to an elite-8 appearance in this year’s tournament.

This year’s exciting Reebok Summer Championships held this week in Las
Vegas, Nevada, has been an event filled with high anticipation each day.

With a talented Super Pool of teams facing off each day in front of a large
number of college coaches, the pressure has mounted exactly as planned. On
Wednesday, superstar scoring machine Kenny Boynton once again led a scoring
onslaught as he knocked down an excursion of three-point bombs and
transition baskets to carry his Team Breakdown (FL) group past the Franchize
All-Stars (TX), 64-51.

Team Breakdown, widely recognized as the nation’s premier AAU/club program,
saw defeat for the only the second time this AAU season, as they were
defeated on Wednesday by D-One Sports (NC), 71-78. The nation’s top ranked
player in America’s 2009 class, 6-foot-4 dynamic senior guard John Wall
leads this very talented group of performers. Wall is as talented and
skilled that I have seen play the game in recent memory …

6-foot-10 senior Ryan Kelly of Raleigh (NC) Ravenscroft School is the real
deal. This ultra-talented post player has the skill level and promise to
become one of the great ones one day. His big time performance Wednesday
evening for D-One Sports in a narrow, 81-86, loss at the hands of DC Triple
Threat puts him in the category of the nation’s select big men. Kelly’s
ability to score around the painted area as well as from the perimeter with
ease are worthy of the price of admission. His fluidity with the basketball
seems almost unnatural, but is what makes him so special …

14 year AAU/club coach Rock Johnson is always fun to watch coach his
I-American All-Stars team in these events, and he did not disappoint
Wednesday, as his team faced a tough and finely tuned and oiled machine
known as the Illinois Wolves. The Wolves, coached by Jeff Carpenter and led
by 6-foot-4 senior guard Joseph Bertrand and 6-foot-3 senior Diamond Taylor
cruised past I-American in fine fashion, 70-52.

The well-coached and disciplined version of this year’s Wolves are one team
that needs to be wreckoned with sincerely, as they make their push towards
winning this year’s Reebok event. This team has a very good mix of players,
including very steady guard play, wings that put pressure on the opposing
team’s transition defense and also post players that possess very good
length and athleticism. This is my darkhorse team that will make noise in
this year’s tournament.
