Congratulations to Devon Hodges, a 6’6″ sophomore forward from Illinois who recently committed to play basketball at the University of Wisconsin. Devon, who is only 15, has tremendous potential and can run the floor well, create his own shot, and block shots on the defensive end. We are glad to have Devon on our site and had a chance to ask him a few questions about his recruiting process and what he thought about PrepChamps:
1) How did you decide to create a profile on PrepChamps.com?
I first got to know about the PrepChamps website from my AAU Coach Mr. Mike Mullins of the Illinois Wolves. He told me along with my teammates about PrepChamps and told us that he wanted us to create a profile. I’m glad he did!
2) What advice would you give other athletes when they’re creating a profile on PrepChamps and trying to get noticed?
I would tell other athletes who are making a profile that it really is a great website not only for getting noticed by colleges but also for keeping up with news and information about other athletes dealing with basketball and other sports as well from all over.
3) What was the most challenging thing about your recruiting process?
One of the most challenging things about the recruiting process had to be the different rules I learned in regards to the can and can’t dos in recruiting on the part of the colleges and on part of a recruit. Also one major challenge was the fact that the more you start to visit these colleges and get to know the coaches it really is hard to pick one without feeling like your letting down another. (you do start to develop friendships with the coaches as you visit and start keeping in contact with them).
4) What was the most rewarding part of the recruiting process?
The most rewarding part of the recruiting process had to be the different universities that I was used to seeing on television actually started to notice me and knew who I was. It was a real honor!!! But to also find a college that I knew was a perfect fit for me based upon location, the academic program (based on my major), and the basketball program they run is a perfect match for me.
5) What would you say to other athletes who were in your same situation before getting recruited?
Athletes who are in my position right now I would tell them to keep working hard and to never give up. To keep pursing your dreams. After missing the whole AAU season last year but one tournament at the end due to an injury was pretty tough for me. However, my AAU Coach told me I had to work hard to get back in shape and get healthy. That I would have to work alittle bit harder to get back to where I was at first. I’m glad he did it motivated me because I knew this was something I really wanted for myself!
6) What is something you wish you had known before you started trying to get your name out to college coaches?
I sure wish I would have known what position the college coaches would actually be looking at me for. Playing in high school I play a center because of my height however in college I would not be a center I would be more of a 3 or 4. Which means that now I have to go out of my comfort zone to try and learn better footwork and dribbling skills. Good thing is my AAU Coach does tell us that footwork and dribbling are things we should be working on anyway. ( just to want to be an all around player) But the last thing would be to just stay focused at all times and to not stray off course. (which can be hard at times)
7) What, if anything would you change about our website?
Absolutely nothing!!! Everything is great!!
Thanks, Devon. Congratulations again and good luck the rest of this season!
