So you want to get a scholarship to play sports in college? There are a lot of sports scholarships out there, but depending on the sport, competition can be high. Finding a sports scholarship involves getting your name out to college coaches while making sure you have a good grasp of the NCAA’s rules and regulations. Plus, you have to have some talent and be dedicated to your sport.
For some of the smaller sports – rugby, lacrosse, swimming, wrestling, etc–scholarships are available but they go unused for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, it’s because athletes just don’t think to contact the coaches, or they don’t give them the right information. Other times, it’s because a school may not have the budget or resources to spend a lot of time recruiting athletes.
At PrepChamps, it’s our goal to help guide you through the recruiting process and provide an easy way for you to have your stats, pictures, highlight videos and academic information all in one place. Make sure to include anything and everything you think that will help you stand out to college coaches and recruiters and increase your chances of scoring a sports scholarship.
Here are a few other tips to keep in mind while you’re trying to get recruited:
- Start Early – It’s almost never too early to start researching what schools you’re interested in so you can get in touch with coaches and let them know you’re interested. Also, many scholarships have deadlines so be aware of these dates to make sure you don’t miss them.
- Learn about NCAA Regulations – Make sure to learn everything you can about the NCAA regulations and requirements to make sure you’re eligible to play your sport of choice in college. Athletes who sign up for a free account on PrepChamps.com have access to our NCAA Clearinghouse Checklist tool, which is an easy way to track their progress and eligibility.
- Work Hard – Scholarships are available but you have to work for them. If you’re serious about getting a scholarship to play sports in college, you have to completely dedicate yourself to achieving your goal. This may mean getting up early to work out or staying late after practice to improve your skills. Make sure you talk to your coach to see what you can improve on. You also have to work hard on the academic side. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t have the grades, then you aren’t getting a scholarship. Study hard, ask questions in class and be a good student.
