Too Much Kenny Boynton at Reebok Summer Championships

Thursday, July 24th, 2008, filed in Summer Championships

This year’s annual and most exciting event of the year, the Reebok Summer Championships held in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada, got off to a great start this year with a match-up of Kenny Boynton and his nationally top-ranked Team Breakdown out of Florida faced up with the Northwest Panthers out of Washington.

Among the nation’s very elite unsigned senior prospects, Kenny Boynton of Florida made the first day of this year’s tournament his, as he ripped the nets for 34 amazing points in a big 85-73 first game win over the Northwest Panthers. Boynton was the man and simply put all doubters to rest on day one, as he showed superior athleticism and determination in his only performance of the tournament thus far.

Boynton put on a shooting exhibition while being defended closely by the nation’s top-ranked defensive guard Aaron Bradley. With Bradley draped all over him on numerous times throughout tournament game, Boynton somehow was still able to get his shot off and with regularity against an imposing threat.

Bradley and teammate, 6-foot-3 senior recruiting target Abdul Gaddy, were among the highlighted and featured players on the day for Reebok. They did not disappoint as the dynamic duo combined to show why they are highly regarded among the nation’s best backcourts.

In the featured big man match-up of the day, the nation’s two top post prospects went at it. 6-foot-9 inch senior Renardo Sidney and 6-foot-10 inch senior John Henson battled it out head to head in a match-up of different styles. Sidney, the physically much more mature performer and Henson, the longer and much more active post player, both saw success against one another in different ways.

Henson scored effectively on the low block and in transition, while Sidney saw much more of his scoring potential realized when attacking the basket or making moves from the perimeter. Henson would come out victorious in the match-up, leading his team to a narrow 73-69 win.

Notes:

Tournament Organizer and Grassroots Director Chris Rivers continues to get it done with the best players and the best events each year amidst an industry filled with intense competition. This year’s Reebok Summer Championships has been filled with college coaches, scouts and media, while also boasting great food and media support.

I spent some time Tuesday at all three major shoe-sponsored AAU/club basketball events, and came away only impressed by Reebok’s version. Reebok’s combination of superior customer service and organization make this year’s event one to remember.

The Palm Beach Panthers showed alot of talent at the state tournament, there a physical team that loves to go after the ball on defense. Montell Williams handled the ball and controlled the offense. Other guard Cody Fobbs was constantly knocking down open and contested shot late in the game the would put the ball in his hand in let him loose. They have about four potential division one players on there team.
