WVU’s Stewart Might’ve Had a Run for Head Football Coach Job, 12-year-old Style

Monday, March 10th, 2008, filed in PrepChamps News

In a truly inspirational moment, we wanted to call attention to the West Virginia Mountaineers and their newest standout, 12-year old Joshua Irizarry. CBS Sports learned last week that this optimistic middle-schooler applied to the WVU’s head football coach announcement last fall following Rich Rodriguez’s abrupt departure and prior to Bill Stewart’s bowl appearance and solidification of the job.

In his application, Joshua noted, “Consider the publicity your campus would receive . . . I understand this would be a move more suited for a team like Temple, but I am just asking for your consideration . . .
“Don’t think of this as hiring a 12-year-old kid from a nowhere town, but think of this as hiring a dedicated football mind trying to help a team . . . I would work for any conditions you would wish to provide.”

All’s we have to say is THIS KID HAS HEART . . . and maybe if his football coaching aspirations don’t pan out, a great career in jurisprudence, according to WVU President Mike Garrison: “The lawyer side of me appreciated the arguments he used for why he should be considered for the job. The father side of me recognized a young man with a lot of determination and ambition.”

What’s more, Joshua lives in Connecticut (even though he’s been a Mountaineer since he started watching football at age 4 - and is not yet permitted to drive a car or live legally - say on campus in Morgantown, WV - on his own. Heart, determination, pride, motivation: these are traits usually associated with college football coaches. They are not usually associated with a 12-year-old, but then again, not every 12-year-old applies for the head coaching job of a college football powerhouse . . . So hats off to Joshua Irizarry, and remember: the next time that you wonder if you’ve done all you can, or if what you’re doing is really worth the effort - if the outcome justifies the effort put in - remember that a 12-year-old applied for the WVU head football coach opening, and even though he wasn’t chosen, the entire college sports community now knows who Joshua Irizarry is.

Well, these are interesting thoughts. I think they are true. However, everything is
relative and ambiguous to my mind.
